Posted 16/06/2022
The RIAI annual awards this month gives people in Ireland the opportunity to vote for their favourite national architectural project. This year the public choice awards have flagged a number of conservation projects including the restoration of St Patrick's Church, Dublin, the Honan Chapel in Cork and Ramelton Castle Street Historic Towns Initiative.
Ramelton Castle Street has been a collaboration in North West Ireland, between Donegal County Council, the Ramelton Georgian Society, Dedalus Architecture and individual property owners, with some additional funding from the Heritage Council.
Fourteen buildings in Castle Street have benefited from the initiative with a wide variety of conservation works carried out, including the repair and reinstatement of historic shop fronts, roof and chimney restoration and the installation of cast-iron rainwater drains.
The aim of this unique project was to help all parties work together to achieve best conservation practise based on historical evidence.
Other highlighted projects from this year's shortlist included a contemporary re-working of Saltpans cottage in Co Donegal.
